Former Tabung Haji chairman, ex-Treasury sec-gen released after seven-day remand

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 1): The former chairman of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) and a former secretary general of the Treasury have been released from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remand on Tuesday after being detained for seven days to assist investigations into issues related to the agency.

According to a source, they were released on Tuesday morning after being remanded from Aug 27, and the process of recording their statements had been completed by MACC investigating officers.

The media previously reported that both men were remanded for seven days to assist MACC investigations into the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on TH.

The RCI report on TH, uploaded on the official portal of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) on July 29, recommended, among other things, that a forensic audit be conducted to examine how past investment decisions were made, which resulted in TH suffering a severe decline in the value of its assets.

The RCI report, which investigated TH’s management and operations from 2014 to 2020, also listed problematic investments requiring a forensic audit.

The RCI found that suspicious transactions and concealment of information had occurred.

The scope of the RCI investigation covered issues concerning TH from 2014 to 2020, with reference to findings by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young and Roland Berger, excluding the restructuring and recovery plans that were being implemented at the time.
