KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 26): An ex-chairman of Lembaga Tabung Haji and a former Treasury secretary general have been arrested as part of investigations into the pilgrims fund board’s affairs.
The two men, both in their 60s, were detained at about 4pm on Tuesday after turning up at the headquarters of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Putrajaya to provide their statements, according to people familiar with the matter.
The duo are expected to be brought before the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for remand proceedings to facilitate further investigations.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman confirmed the arrests but declined to elaborate, citing ongoing investigations.
It is understood that the investigation centres on matters raised in the recently released report by the Royal Commission of Inquiry that examined the governance, financial management and investment practices of Tabung Haji.
Investigations are ramping up since the long-awaited release of the Royal Commission of Inquiry report into Tabung Haji’s affairs between 2014 and 2020 in July.
The panel was set up in 2022 to investigate the management and operations of Tabung Haji amid concerns over its financial health as well as compliance with the law governing the board.
The probe into Tabung Haji has so far snagged nearly a dozen people, including a former chief executive of the fund detained since Aug 21.
