PUTRAJAYA (Aug 27): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained seven-day remand orders against a former Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) chairman and a former Treasury secretary general.
Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah issued the remand orders, effective until Sept 2, at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court on Thursday, following an application by the MACC.
The remand orders were sought as part of investigations into the pilgrims’ fund board’s affairs.
The two men, both in their sixties, were detained at about 4pm on Tuesday (Aug 25) after turning up at the MACC’s headquarters in Putrajaya to provide their statements, according to people familiar with the matter.
The men will now return to the MACC headquarters to serve out their seven-day remand.
Separately, the court also granted a four-day remand extension against a former Tabung Haji chief executive officer. Ezrene issued the extension, effective until Aug 31.
The former top executive, who is also in his sixties, was previously remanded from Aug 21 to Aug 27.
All three men, who were clad in orange lock-up attire and handcuffed, arrived at the court complex at 9.30am, accompanied by MACC officers.
The TH Royal Commission of Inquiry report, made public on July 29, documented various management and operational weaknesses involving the institution between 2014 and 2020, and identified several problematic investments requiring a forensic audit.
The report also highlighted evidence of suspicious transactions and the concealment of information.
