Anwar described the passing of the wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a great loss to society and the nation.

He said this before delivering the opening address at the International Future Conference 2026 (IFC 2026) at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuala Lumpur campus here on Monday.

The prime minister also invited conference participants to join in reciting Surah Al-Fatihah for the deceased.

Earlier, Hasmah was confirmed to have passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Monday morning at the age of 100.

News of her passing was confirmed by her son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, when contacted by Bernama on Monday.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, Anwar shared his sadness and his wife Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s sorrow over the passing of the deceased.

The prime minister said that he and his wife knew the deceased as a person of gentle speech, resilience, and great inner strength.

He also described the deceased affectionately known as Kak Hasmah as someone who always cared for those around her with a mother's love.

“Today, the nation has lost a motherly figure who was close to the hearts of the people.

“We will cherish the memory of Kak Hasmah with deep affection, along with the legacy of service and kindness she leaves behind,” he said in the post.

Anwar and Dr Wan Azizah also prayed that Allah SWT would forgive and accept the deceased's good deeds, and expressed hope that Dr Mahathir and the entire family would be granted the strength to face this loss.
