KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 16): The government will amend the Tabung Haji Act 1995 (Act 535) to ensure that the trust of Muslims continues to be safeguarded, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, also the finance minister, said the amendment was among the Madani government’s measures to strengthen governance and ensure that every institutional weakness was addressed firmly.

"Governance must continue to be strengthened, institutions cleaned up and every weakness firmly addressed. The Tabung Haji Act will be amended to safeguard the trust of Muslims.

"Meanwhile Auku (Universities and University Colleges Act) 1971 must be completely repealed without being replaced by a new law that continues to restrict students’ voices,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

In the same post, the prime minister said that the Madani government under his leadership would continue to ensure that economic growth translated into a better quality of life for the people, regardless of their political or state background.

He said people in opposition-led states also deserved to be looked after, as the government’s responsibility was not only to its supporters or certain states, but to the entire people and the nation.

In conjunction with the 2026 Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) National Congress that concluded on Sunday, Anwar, who is also PKR’s president, said the party had chosen the path of principles, idealism and courage to do what was right, by not compromising principles or betraying the ideals of reform merely to defend power.

He stressed that PKR must remain a platform for the struggle for all Malaysians across race, religion and region, with the principle of justice demonstrated through policies and actions.

"Keadilan's strength relies on a clean team, strong leadership and organised efforts. Strength is not a tool to enrich oneself, one’s family or cronies, but a trust to champion the people, uphold justice and elevate human dignity.

"Close ranks, streamline efforts and continue moving forward for the people and the nation,” he said.
