KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 11): Former prime minister and Pagoh MP Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he and five other Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) MPs stayed in the Dewan Rakyat during Tuesday’s special sitting on Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) to fulfil their responsibilities to nearly 10 million depositors, despite a walkout by other members of Perikatan Nasional (PN), PAS and Parti Wawasan Negara.
Muhyiddin said Bersatu MPs chose to participate because TH was an important issue affecting millions of depositors.
Bersatu vice-president Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin defended the decision, saying the debate was important and instead should be extended, without “political drama”.
In his speech, Muhyiddin said TH was more than a financial or investment institution as it serves as a trust to help Muslims perform the haj. He questioned findings in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report, including political appointments, creative accounting and high bonuses paid to senior management while TH was in an asset deficit.
Muhyiddin called for an independent forensic audit to be completed within one year to trace fund flows and identify possible fraud, abuse of power or negligence. Those found responsible should be prosecuted, he said.
He also urged the government to fully implement the RCI’s recommendations, including updating the Tabung Haji Act 1995, strengthening oversight by Bank Negara Malaysia or other relevant regulators, establishing an independent investment committee and restructuring TH’s investment portfolio.
Muhyiddin also called for an end to the appointment of active politicians to TH’s board and senior management. He said appointments, including those at subsidiaries, should be based on merit and undergo strict “fit and proper” tests based on Bank Negara standards.
He said the aim should be to restore public confidence in TH and prevent past mistakes
Bersatu’s position in PN is being questioned after PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said that Bersatu was no longer part of the coalition. However, PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar later said that Bersatu was still a member of PN.
PAS, the largest party in PN, ended its political ties with Bersatu on June 8, ahead of the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections. PAS instead worked with Barisan Nasional (BN) in Johor, where BN won 48 seats with PAS’s informal support. In Negeri Sembilan, BN and PN parties, including PAS and Wawasan, won a total of 25 seats.
Bersatu has since filed a complaint with the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (ROS) over its membership status in PN after it was excluded from the PN Supreme Council meeting on July 16, 2026. ROS is currently reviewing the complaint based on the Societies Act 1966, Societies Regulations 1984, PN’s constitution and its official records.
