SHAH ALAM (March 16): Bagan member of Parliament (MP) Lim Guan Eng has been named the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) adviser after securing a seat in the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) in what was widely regarded as one of the fiercest contests in the party’s history.
Lim, who previously served as the party’s national chairman, garnered 1,719 votes, placing 26th — just enough to secure a spot in the party’s 30-member top decision-making body. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, who topped the party polls, has been named the party’s national chairman.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke SIew Fook will continue as the party’s secretary general, the most powerful position in DAP. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has been appointed as the party’s deputy national chairman.
The national vice-chairman positions will be held by Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, Selangor state executive councilor Ng Suee Lim, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan, and Negeri Sembilan state executive councilor Arul Kumar Jambunathan.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh have been appointed as two of the three deputy secretary general positions. The remaining position will be held by Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.
Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Liew Chin Tong has been named the party’s strategic director.
Earlier, a total of 3,342 delegates attended the one-day congress at the Ideal Convention Center (IDCC) in Shah Alam, to vote for the 30 CEC members for the 2025-2028 term.
Topping the vote count was Gobind Singh Deo, who received 2,785 votes, followed by Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, with 2,631 votes, and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, who garnered 2,585 votes.
Notably, Lim Hui Ying, who is Guan Eng’s sister and the deputy finance minister, failed to secure a spot, falling short with 1,573 votes.
Another prominent figure who missed the cut was party veteran and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, who failed to make it into the party’s top decision-making body, with 1,331 votes.
