KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 14): Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KL:TENAGA) confirmed that its Tuanku Jaafar Power Station is operating as usual following a minor fire at its gas pipeline vent, which lasted for 14 seconds and was promptly extinguished without any major damage to assets or disruption to power supply.
According to TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Muhamad Nazri Pazil, the fire started at 8.28pm on Thursday and was swiftly controlled due to the station’s safe shutdown procedure.
Only 350MW of the station’s 1,411MW generation capacity was suspended from operations, with the rest of plant capacity remaining unaffected.
“The fire was isolated to the flare at the vent-out gas pipeline and was extinguished immediately. Our initial assessment shows no significant damage to our assets or power-generating machinery,” Nazri said.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, and the Fire and Recue Department has confirmed that the power plant can continue its operations safely.
Nazri added that Tenaga is implementing preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future. He also assured that the company’s electricity supply remains unaffected, ensuring uninterrupted service to its customers.
This is the first such incident at Tenaga's power plants in two years. In December 2023, its 1,010MW coal-fired Manjung 4 power plant suspended operations due to fractures involving its steam turbine, resulting in an estimated RM400 million capacity payment loss last year.
Shares of Tenaga settled up two sen or 0.14% at RM13.90, giving it a market capitalisation of RM80.8 billion.
