Italian Serie A football club Hellas Verona has been bought over by Austin, Texas-based Presidio Investors from owner Maurizio Setti who will remain involved with the club as senior adviser.

(Jan 16): Private equity group Presidio Investors has purchased Italian football club Hellas Verona, the latest US firm to target a team in the country’s world-class Serie A league.

Austin, Texas-based Presidio bought Verona from owner Maurizio Setti, who’s chaired the team for the past 13 seasons, according to a statement on Thursday. No financial details were provided. Bloomberg reported in November that Presidio was considering making an offer.

Verona joins a growing roster of European clubs with US ownership. In Italy alone, teams including Atalanta, Fiorentina, Inter Milan, AC Milan and AS Roma are controlled by US-based owners.

A group of Greek students founded Hellas Verona in 1903, and the club is currently languishing in 17th position in Serie A.

The team will be led by a board including executive chairman Italo Zanzi, a former chief executive officer of AS Roma. Setti will remain involved with the club in a new role as senior adviser.
