KUALA LUMPUR (May 13): The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has determined that there is a reasonable indication that an industry in the US is threatened by the import of ferrosilicon from Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Russia.

Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon with a typical silicon content by weight of 15%–90%. It contains a high proportion of iron silicides.

In a statement on Saturday (May 11), the USITC said the products are allegedly sold in the US at less than fair value and subsidised by the governments of Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Russia.

USITC chairman David S Johanson and commissioners Rhonda K Schmidtlein, Jason E Kearns and Amy A Karpel voted in the affirmative.

As a result of the commission’s affirmative determinations, the US Department of Commerce will continue its investigations of ferrosilicon imports from Brazil, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Russia, with its preliminary countervailing duty determinations due on or about June 21, 2024, and its preliminary anti-dumping duty determinations due on or about Sept 4, 2024.
