KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 7): Pertama Digital Bhd on Wednesday (Sept 7) announced the appointment of Datuk Seri Dr Nik Norzrul Thani Nik Hassan Thani as its non-independent and non-executive director.

Nik Norzrul, 62, is currently the chairman and senior partner of Zaid Ibrahim & Co (ZICO) and a member of ZICO Law, a network of local law firms focused on Asean, according to a bourse filing made by Pertama Digital.

Nik Norzrul's appointment came just days after the group announced the emergence of former chief justice Tun Zaki Azmi as a major shareholder.

Prior to joining ZICO, Nik Norzrul practised law with international law firm Baker & McKenzie, according to Pertama Digital.

"He also previously worked with an audit firm and a bank in Kuala Lumpur. In 2017, he was appointed by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry as chairman of the Malaysia-Singapore Business Council," the filing read.

Nik Norzrul also holds directorships in several other public and listed companies, namely Sime Darby Plantation Bhd, T7 Global Bhd, Malaysian Rating Corp Bhd, Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd, Cagamas Holdings Bhd and MUFG Bank (Malaysia) Bhd.

In a Bursa Malaysia filing last Thursday (Sept 1), the group said it had redesignated Zaki from independent non-executive chairman to non-independent non-executive chairman after he became a major shareholder of Pertama Digital with an 11.538% stake via the acquisition of 50 million shares by his vehicle Mypay Capital Sdn Bhd for RM25 million.

Pertama Digital's share price settled three sen or 2.14% lower at RM1.37 on Wednesday, bringing the group a market capitalisation of RM593.7 million. Year-to-date, the stock has jumped 136.21%.
