KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 22): The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has urged social media users to refrain from sharing postings that incite racial and religious sentiments.
In a statement on Tuesday (Nov 22), MCMC interim chairperson Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din said all parties must accept and respect the outcome of the recent general election and the impending appointment of the prime minister.
He said MCMC will monitor to prevent the spread of fake news as well as statements that insult the royalty, religion and race (3R).
He said these fall under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and offenders may be fined a maximum of RM50,000 or sentenced to one year in jail or both.
Mohamad Salim said MCMC will jointly take enforcement actions with the police against offenders based on complaints from members of the public to preserve peace.
