KLANG (Nov 5): Japanese retail chain Daiso Malaysia Group Sdn Bhd has officially opened its RM1.2 billion Global Distribution Centre (GDC) at Taman Perindustrian Samudera, Pulau Indah, reinforcing Malaysia’s positioning as a premier regional supply chain and logistics hub.

The GDC, spanning 133,666 sq m (about 1.4 million sq ft), is Daiso’s largest warehouse facility worldwide, surpassing the size of its facility in its home base in Hiroshima, Japan.

The GDC will anchor central logistics operations across 27 countries in Asia and the Middle East, and is set to process over 1,000 containers of household, stationery, and lifestyle goods at any one time.

Officiating the grand opening on Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that goods sorted, stored, and repacked in Pulau Indah will soon head to major international destinations like Dubai, Manila, and São Paulo.

Under the Madani Economy framework and New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), the government prioritises investments that create high-paying jobs, build local capabilities, link with domestic suppliers, and transfer technology — rather than measuring success by headline figures alone, said Anwar.

“Goods will be sorted, stored, and then repacked for different global markets right here in Pulau Indah…and this is where the value and the skilled jobs will be located,” he added.

Daiso’s commitment, alongside US tech giant Google’s US$15 billion (RM61 billion) investment decision in Petaling Jaya announced on Wednesday, proves Malaysia’s growing capability to serve as a high-value regional base across technology, trade, and logistics, he said.

Similarly, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said Daiso’s decision to build its largest logistics hub in Pulau Indah sends an unequivocal signal to global investors regarding Malaysia’s infrastructure readiness.

Loke noted that the Ministry of Transport is expediting digital trade documentation and clearance via the Malaysia Maritime Single Window to shorten port turnaround times.

Ongoing port developments — including Westports 2 expanding from 14 million to 28 million TEUs and plans for a third port on Pulau Carey — will ensure Port Klang maintains its position among the world's top 10 busiest container transhipment hubs, he said.

At the event, Daiso exchanged a memorandum of understanding with PKT Logistics (M) Sdn Bhd for integrated warehousing management and regional freight forwarding, deepening domestic haulage integration and upskilling local talent into specialised supply chain engineering roles.
