KUALA LUMPUR (July 25): Jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is in good condition after undergoing a coronary angiogram at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital, Serdang, with doctors confirming that balloon angioplasty or stent insertion is not required.

In a statement on Saturday, Najib's solicitors, Messrs Shafee & Co, said the procedure was carried out after medical assessments detected coronary blockages. While doctors had initially assessed a 95% likelihood that further intervention would be needed, the angiogram showed the blockages could be managed with medication, continued monitoring and follow-up treatment.

“The decision to proceed with today’s procedure was based entirely on medical necessity and the clinical findings available at the time. Given the high probability that further intervention would be required, the concerns surrounding the procedure were both real and well-founded. Fortunately, the coronary angiogram demonstrated that the blockages could be managed without the need for balloon angioplasty or stent insertion,” the statement read.

Najib has been serving his prison sentence since August 2022 after being convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) subsidiary. His original 12-year jail term was reduced to six years, and his RM210 million fine was reduced to RM50 million following a partial royal pardon in 2024.

He is also appealing a separate conviction involving RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds, for which he was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment and fined more than RM11 billion.
