KUALA LUMPUR (July 22): Influencer-turned-entrepreneur Khairul Aming said a letter of demand has been sent to Maxis Bhd (KL:MAXIS) over the alleged leak of his personal data from the mobile network operator.
Official reports have been made to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the police and the Personal Data Protection Commissioner Office, Khairul said in a social media post on Wednesday. He did not spell out his demand in the post.
“My lawyers will take on the case until it is resolved,” Khairul said. “Honestly, [I] feel sad and scared because privacy can be lost so easily” after disclosure of his phone details, payment history, subscription, as well as his identification card number, he added.
Malaysian authorities are investigating the alleged personal data disclosure while Maxis said it is taking legal action against the leaker.
Born Khairul Amin Kamarulzaman, he had his phone bill details spread all across social media on Monday. Khairul took to Threads to question the telecommunications company about how these details could be publicly accessed.
Under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, unlawful disclosure of personal data is an offence punishable with a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment not exceeding three years, or both.
On its part, Maxis has said all access to customer accounts are fully logged and the company was able to track down the individual linked to the incident.
“We have identified the individual linked to this incident and are taking immediate action, including legal action,” Maxis said, adding that the incident was isolated with no other customers affected.
