KUALA LUMPUR (July 21): Malaysian authorities are investigating alleged personal data disclosure of entrepreneur Khairul Aming while Maxis Bhd (KL:MAXIS) is taking legal action against the leaker.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to obtain a full report on claims that the data was accessed without authorisation from a telecommunications company’s internal system, Berita Harian reported.

"I have met with a representative from the telecommunications company and they informed me that they are contacting Khairul Aming,” Fahmi was quoted as saying.

Born Khairul Amin Kamarulzaman, the content creator turned entrepreneur had his phone bill details spread all across social media on Monday. Khairul took to Threads to question the telecommunications company about how these details could be publicly accessed.

Under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, unlawful disclosure of personal data is an offence punishable with a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment not exceeding three years, or both.

In a statement on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, Maxis said all access to customer accounts are fully logged and the telecommunications company was able to track down the individual linked to the incident.

“We have identified the individual linked to this incident and are taking immediate action, including legal action,” Maxis said, adding that the incident was isolated with no other customers affected.
