KUALA LUMPUR (July 8): The government is considering additional incentives for charging point operators to accelerate installations of electric vehicle charging points in the country.
The government is discussing measures to encourage operators to build more charging points, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Sim Tze Tzin told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.
“Without substations, no one can build charging points because the electricity supply would be insufficient,” he said. “This requires incentives, policy, and we need to create the entire ecosystem.”
Sim was responding to Kubang Pasu MP Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ismail, who asked what measures the government is implementing to close the gap between the number of charging points already developed and its target.
Malaysia has fallen short of its goal of having 10,000 charging points by 2025, ending the year with only 5,624 points.
The government is now targeting 30,000 points by the end of the decade, Sim said.
There is still a long way to go before the target is reached as electric vehicles and their accompanying infrastructure are still a relatively new market segment for Malaysia, he noted.
Currently, eligible charging point operators enjoy 100% tax exemption in the form of an investment tax allowance under the Green Investment Tax Allowance.
Companies manufacturing electric vehicle charging equipment, meanwhile, are supported via full income tax exemption on statutory income until assessment year 2032.
