KUALA LUMPUR (May 14): Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has called for the findings of a special investigation committee into Azam Baki’s public shareholdings, as well as any follow-up action, to be made public.
He told The Edge on the sidelines of The Asian Banker Summit 2026 on Thursday that the committee, chaired by Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, has completed its report and presented it to the Cabinet, but the Cabinet has not yet been briefed on the next steps decided by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Gobind, who is also DAP national chairman, added that the matter has not been brought back for further Cabinet discussion and that, for now, only the chief secretary to the government is aware of any action to be taken.
"At the end of the day, people want to know what has happened and it's for him (Shamsul Azri) to come out now and to state clearly where matters lie [on the issue]. Ultimately, I think it's also important for him to publish a report that makes it very clear what the findings were and what actions will be taken,” he said.
The controversy emerged after Bloomberg reported that Azam owned 17.7 million shares in financial services firm Velocity Capital Partner Bhd (KL:VELOCITY), valued at roughly RM800,000, exceeding the RM100,000 shareholding threshold for public servants.
Azam acknowledged purchasing the shares before later disposing of them, while maintaining that he had acted within the rules and denying wrongdoing.
Azam retired as MACC chief commissioner on Tuesday (May 12) after his tenure was extended three times beyond the mandatory retirement age. He was succeeded by Abdul Halim, whose appointment took effect on Wednesday (May 13).
