KUALA LUMPUR (April 10): The government is encouraging Malaysians to switch to the Time of Use tariff as electricity costs rise.
In a statement on Friday, the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) said under the Time of Use tariff, rates are higher during peak hours (2pm-10pm on weekdays) and lower during off-peak periods, allowing users to save by shifting energy consumption to cheaper times.
Petra said the move aims to ease cost pressures, improve energy efficiency, and reduce strain on the grid, with 128,868 users already on the scheme as of February 2026.
Rising fuel costs led Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KL:TENAGA) to announce lower automatic fuel adjustment (AFA) rebates for April, at 0.47 sen/kWh compared with 2.15 sen/kWh in March. This will result in higher electricity bills, with further declines expected through July 2026.
For example, usage of 800kWh would increase from RM328.34 in March to RM342.05 in April.
However, households using below 600kWh per month (around RM216) are exempt from the AFA adjustment.
