KUALA LUMPUR (April 1): Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KL:TENAGA) said the automatic fuel adjustment (AFA) for April has been set at a rebate of 0.47 sen per kWh, compared with 2.15 sen per kWh in March, according to the utility giant's website.

The AFA, introduced by the Energy Commission in July last year, provides monthly adjustments to electricity tariffs based on preceding fuel costs such as gas and coal used in power plants as well as exchange rates. It replaces the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT), which was adjusted every six months.

The change means the electricity tariff will be more expensive as consumers will be getting a lower rebate of 1.68 sen per kWh in April. For instance if a consumer used 800kWh, their March electricity bill will be RM328.34, but will increase to RM342.05 in April, according to TNB’s electricity calculator.

However, this does not apply to low-consumption domestic consumers who use below 600kWh per month (or about RM216 in a monthly bill), as they are exempted from AFA — whether it is a surcharge or rebate.

AFA also does not apply to consumers that subscribe to green electricity tariff, which certifies that the electricity comes from renewable energy sources.

The AFA movement is capped upwards (as surcharge) at 10% of the allowed generation tariff every month. Any adjustment bigger than that requires Cabinet approval. There is no cap for AFA rebates.

According to TNB’s three-month projection, rebates are expected to be lower at 0.39 sen/kWh in May, 0.91 sen/kWh in June, and 0.08 sen/kWh in July 2026.
