KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 27): Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said after Friday’s Cabinet meeting that a special task force investigating allegations of share ownership by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki is nearing the end of its probe. The committee, led by the attorney general, is expected to submit its report next week.

Fahmi also said that a police report has been filed regarding allegations that the MACC’s powers were abused for corporate gain. The police are expediting investigations to identify anyone who may have broken the law and bring them to court.

Fahmi, who is also the government’s spokesperson, said the Cabinet views the issues seriously and is reviewing the possibility of setting up a Royal Commission of Inquiry, depending on the task force’s findings.

The issue follows public outrage after Bloomberg reported that Azam Baki owned 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd (KL:VELOCITY). Azam said he bought the shares in early 2025 and sold them in July, maintaining that he acted within the rules.

Another report by Bloomberg had implicated Azam in an alleged collusion with businesspeople to take over local companies.
