KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 13): The government has established a special task force to investigate Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced on Friday.
The task force will be headed by Chief Secretary to the government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and will report its findings to the Cabinet for further action, Fahmi said at a news conference after the weekly Cabinet meeting.
He added that the suspension of the MACC chief was not discussed during the meeting.
Fahmi did not disclose the scope of the taskforce’s investigation and declined to comment on whether a timeline had been set for the task force to submit its findings.
The Cabinet’s move comes amid public outrage following a news report on Azam’s outsized shareholdings in publicly listed companies. Bloomberg first reported that he owned 17.7 million shares in financial services firm Velocity Capital Partner Bhd (KL:VELOCITY).
Azam acknowledged purchasing the shares in early 2025 before selling them in July, but maintained that he had acted within the rules.
He has also said he is open to fully cooperating with any investigations, while taking legal action against Bloomberg.
Another report on Thursday implicated Azam in an alleged collusion with businesspeople to take over local companies.
Earlier, eight PKR lawmakers led by former economic minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli called on the top leadership of DAP and Amanah to press for investigations into the allegations against Azam.
