Malaysia’s anti-graft chief Azam Baki says open to being investigated

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 13): Malaysia’s anti-graft agency chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said he is open to being investigated by any committee established by the government to examine his shareholdings.

Azam, who is the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), reiterated in a personal statement that he has made the necessary declarations through official channels based on current regulations governing public service officers.

“I have nothing to hide,” he said. “I welcome any transparent, independent and objective process to ascertain the facts based on evidence and in accordance with the principles of justice and the rule of law.”

The statement comes amid simmering public outrage following news report of his outsized holdings in shares of public listed companies. Bloomberg first reported of his ownership of 17.7 million shares in financial services firm Velocity Capital Partner Bhd (KL:VELOCITY).

In a press conference reported by national news agency Bernama, Azam has acknowledged of buying the shares in early 2025 before selling them in July. He has also said he is taking legal action against Bloomberg.

"We stand by our reporting,” a Bloomberg News spokesperson said in an email to The Edge.

Azam also said he will fully cooperate with any investigations, adding that he is confident that “the truth will prevail through a fair and independent process”.
