KUALA LUMPUR (July 21): The Human Resource Development Corporation, or HRD Corp, has appointed former banker Syed Alwi Mohamed Sultan as its new chief executive.
The appointment of Syed Alwi, 51, is effective Monday, HRD Corp said in a statement. He had previously led BNP Paribas Malaysia Bhd and Agrobank and served at other financial institutions including Standard Chartered Saadiq, The Islamic Bank of Asia and Hong Leong Bank Bank.
“Syed Alwi brings with him over 27 years of leadership experience across financial services, banking technology and management consultancy,” HRD Corp noted.
HRD Corp is tasked with collecting levies from some 800,000 employers to fund staff training and upskilling programmes.
Syed Alwi is stepping into a role that was temporarily filled by HRD Corp’s chief strategy officer Rony Ambrose Gobilee since April following the resignation of Datuk Shahul Hameed Dawood, who stepped down after five years as chief executive.
Trained as an accountant at International Islamic University, Syed Alwi also holds Master of Business Administration in Islamic Finance and completed a PhD in finance from Universiti Malaya.
His other stints include leading UMPSA Holdings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah, and state research and innovation commercialisation agency MRANTI Corporation.
