KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 5): Pendang Member of Parliament Datuk Awang Hashim has been suspended from the Dewan Rakyat for 10 days for allegedly insulting Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul in a TikTok video.
Johari said that in a TikTok post on July 18, Awang accused him of being unjust towards both Awang and Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
Johari added that he had sent a letter to Awang on July 22, requesting both a retraction and an apology, and had even sought the help of opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. However, Awang failed to retract his remarks or issue an apology.
“Since you have not retracted the statement or apologised, I hereby order Pendang (Awang) to be ejected from the Dewan Rakyat for 10 days, as per Standing Order 44(2),” Johari said.
This led to a heated exchange between lawmakers across the aisle, as opposition MPs urged Johari not to preside over his own case due to a conflict of interest.
Nevertheless, Johari maintained that his decision was final and proceeded with the debate on the bills.
Earlier on a separate matter, Awang had also retracted his remarks about the "RM94 million discovered in the residence of a former minister" upon Johari’s instruction.
During the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 in the lower house on Nov 4, Awang claimed that RM94 million was found at the residence of a former human resources minister from the DAP.
At that time, Awang stated that his claim was based on "a statement made by the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)".
The MACC later issued a statement denying making such a claim, and several DAP MPs have called for action to be taken against Awang.
