SEPANG (Oct 28): Malaysia’s logistics ecosystem must extend beyond infrastructure to encompass training and workforce development, as the nation advances in automation and digitalisation, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

During the opening ceremony of the DHL Express Kuala Lumpur Gateway on Monday, Anwar urged logistics provider DHL Express and other major local companies to prioritise upskilling their workforce through centres of excellence and advanced training programmes that go beyond basic skills.

Given the growing investment in logistics and the attractiveness of these facilities, Anwar urged DHL Express Asia-Pacific chief executive officer Ken Lee, as well as DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei managing director Julian Neo regarding the training and workforce development.

“I hope they will give it (this) some attention.

“This is a timely opportunity for DHL, as other significant investors have recognised the importance of training and upskilling existing staff. As we transition towards automation, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence (AI), the expertise lies within DHL,” said Anwar.

“I believe DHL should start by establishing a small centre of excellence and training that goes beyond fundamental skills. This upskilling is vital, especially since we are already focusing on automation, digitalisation, and AI. As a leading corporation, DHL has the potential to empower young people in these fields,” he added.

Logistics players urged to prioritise training

The prime minister’s remarks followed DHL Express’ announcement of a €60 million (RM300 million) investment in DHL Express KL Gateway, its fully automated sorting system at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This system is claimed to be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, aimed at enhancing cross-border shipping capacity.
