KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 11): Less than two weeks after being appointed director of Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd (KL:ABMB), Tan Sri Amirsham A Aziz has been named the bank’s new chairman.

His appointment took effect on Thursday (Oct 10). Amirsham, former president and chief executive officer of Malayan Banking Bhd (KL:MAYBANK), replaces Tan Sri Ahmad Don, who passed away last month.

Amirsham first joined Alliance Bank’s board as an independent, non-executive director on Oct 1.

“This (latest) appointment augurs well for the future of Alliance Bank and we look forward to him leading the board and management to scale new heights for our banking Group. With his proven leadership and expertise, we are confident that the bank will achieve continuous growth and success,” said Alliance Bank deputy chairman Ernest Wong Yuen Weng.

“Under the stewardship of the new chairma,n together with the guidance of the board and senior leadership team, Alliance Bank will continue on its Acceler8 2027 growth path towards becoming ‘The Bank For Life’ for its stakeholders,” Wong added.

Amirsham is currently chairman of Sunway REIT Management Sdn Bhd (manager of Sunway Real Estate Investment Trust, a real estate investment trust listed on Bursa Malaysia) and sits on the board of Hap Seng Plantations Holdings Bhd (KL:HSPLANT).

Amirsham was formerly chairman of Bursa Malaysia Bhd (KL:BURSA) and a member of the boards of CapitaLand Limited, Singapore; Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and RAM Holdings Bhd.

Shares of Alliance Bank closed unchanged at RM4.35 on Friday, valuing the bank at RM6.73 billion.
