KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 23): Alliance Bank Malaysia Bhd (KL:ABMB) announced the appointment of Tan Sri Amirsham A Aziz, former president and chief executive officer of Malayan Banking Bhd (KL:MAYBANK), to its board.

Amirsham will officially assume his position as an independent and non-executive director on Oct 1, according to ABMB’s filing with the local stock exchange on Monday. He will also serve as a member of the executive committee.

According to ABMB, Amirsham, who is also the former chairman of Bursa Malaysia Bhd (KL:BURSA), brings over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry.

In addition to his experience in the financial services sector, he has previously served on the boards of CapitaLand Ltd (Singapore), Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), and RAM Holdings Bhd.

He also held the position of Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, overseeing the Economic Planning Unit and Department of Statistics, from March 18, 2008, to April 9, 2009. Following this, he led the National Economic Advisory Council (NEAC) from June 1, 2019, to May 31, 2021.

Currently, Amirsham is the chairman of Sunway REIT Management Sdn Bhd, the manager of Sunway Real Estate Investment Trust (KL:SUNREIT). He also sits on the board of Hap Seng Plantations Holdings Bhd (KL:HSPLANT).

Shares in ABMB rose three sen or 0.67% to settle at RM4.50 on Monday, giving the company a market capitalisation of RM6.97 billion.
