KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 11): Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, who previously worked as an aide to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he was the opposition leader, will be charged in the Kuala Lumpur Court on Thursday.

In a statement late Wednesday, Yusoff's lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali said he had been informed by the investigating officer about the charges, and that further details would be provided the next day.

"A press conference by the defence will be held after the proceedings," Rafique added.

It was reported earlier on Wednesday that Yusoff has been in police remand since last Friday (Sept 6) after authorities allegedly found 305 grams of cannabis and two pistols in his car during a stop. His remand would end on Thursday. The case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Firearms Act 1960.

Rafique said Yusoff had denied the allegations, claiming the pistols and drugs were not his, and that his drug test came back negative.

Yusoff, according to his lawyer, also alleged that the items were planted by individuals seeking revenge, including people with ties to certain political leaders.

His lawyer had sought for the police to allow his client to lodge a police report on the matter, so that the claims would not be labelled as an afterthought or something that had been made up.

Yusoff has an ongoing civil suit against Anwar over alleged sexual assault in October 2018 at Anwar’s Bukit Segambut residence. Anwar, who is also the PKR president, has denied the allegations and filed a counterclaim.
