KUALA LUMPUR (July 19): Telekom Malaysia Bhd (KL:TM) said that its services were unaffected by the global tech outage which crippled many organisations worldwide on Friday.
“TM wishes to assure our customers and stakeholders that there is no disruption to our business operations and services,” the fixed-line operator said in a statement issued late evening.
“TM has proactively detected this issue and managed it swiftly,” it said.
Nonetheless, it said that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
On Friday, a major information technology (IT) outage hit industries across the world and disrupted operations from banking to healthcare, small businesses as well as airports. The outages were reportedly linked to US-based global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike Holdings Inc, which provides penetration workload and endpoint security, threat intelligence and cyberattack services.
According to reports, a software update by Crowdstrike resulted in many Windows systems experiencing the dreaded “Blue Screen of Death” while booting.
At home, the outage affected transportation industries including national railway company Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB), which reported disruptions to its ticketing system and customer service channels.
The local aviation industry was also affected, with local low-cost airlines AirAsia and Firefly experiencing disruptions to their online booking and check-in systems, resulting in slower check-ins and longer queues at airports.
Malaysia Airlines, on the other hand, said it had not been affected by the same issue, according to separate official responses to The Edge's inquiry.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) (KL:AIRPORT) said its network of airports in Malaysia remains unaffected. However, it confirmed that some of its airline partners experienced disruptions due to the outage, according to a Facebook post.
On the same day, Bursa Malaysia Bhd (KL:BURSA) confirmed that there was an interruption on its indexes, but it was later restored at 3.21pm and no trading was affected.
