“I asked for the charge to be done just one day later on Wednesday after my husband’s medical procedure, but this was refused.”

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 22): Tun Daim Zainuddin’s wife, Toh Puan Na'imah Khalid, said she will fight the charge under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act that is expected to be levelled against her in court on Tuesday.

"I will be in court tomorrow. I will fight this charge," she said in a statement issued on Monday night.

Na'imah said a team of MACC officers had earlier on Monday arrived at the hospital where Daim is admitted "demanding to record my statement", having already taken her statement earlier on Jan 10.

“This was despite the fact I assured them that I would give them a statement as soon as my husband’s medical procedure is over on Tuesday."

She said she was informed that she would be charged on Tuesday morning under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act for purportedly "failing to comply with a notice asking to disclose information on assets".

“I asked for the charge to be done just one day later on Wednesday after my husband’s medical procedure, but this was refused. They insisted I be charged tomorrow [Tuesday]."

Na'imah is scheduled to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, a check with the court's e-filing system showed.

She was called up by the MACC to give a statement on Jan 10, when she was grilled for nine hours, according to her lawyers.

Before giving her statement, Na’imah held a press conference outside the MACC headquarters where she said her husband’s success in business was not a crime, and asked if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was suggesting that rich Malay businessmen resorted to corruption.

Daim himself was scheduled to record a statement with the MACC on Jan 15 but did not show up as he was unwell, according to a source.

The octogenarian, his wife and children along with their company, Ilham Tower Sdn Bhd, had also filed a judicial review application challenging MACC's freezing of their bank accounts and seizure of the 60-storey Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 18.
