KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 18): The prosecution in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB-Tanore) trial has notified the High Court that it is potentially down to its last witness in the case — a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigative officer.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib informed judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah that the next witness in the trial, MACC investigative officer Nur Aida Arifin, the 49th prosecution witness, could potentially be the last witness for the prosecution before it draws its case to a close.

Sequerah: No more other witnesses?

Akram: That would be our last witness, Yang Arif.

Sequerah: Then you close the case?

DPP Kamal Baharin Omar: At this stage, Yang Arif, unless and until something else comes up.

Despite being down to the last witness, Akram reminded the court that Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s defence has yet to complete cross-examination of former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz and BNM analyst Adam Ariff Mohd Roslan.

Currently, police officer ACP Foo Wei Min is testifying as the 48th witness in the trial, but he has yet to be cross-examined.

The defence, led by Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, also previously said that it may recall other witnesses who had previously been released from the stand.

In this trial, Najib faces four charges of using his position to obtain bribes totalling RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount.

The trial resumes on October 24, with Foo still on the stand.
