KUALA LUMPUR (July 27): The Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents (MIEA) announced Tan Kian Aun as its new president in a press statement on Thursday (July 27). Outgoing president Chan Ai Cheng's term ended on June 30.

Tan will be installed at the association’s 15th iteration of the National Real Estate Awards (NREA), on July 29 at the Le Meridien hotel, and this will be witnessed by 70 award winners, including real estate agents, firms, and real estate negotiators to be recognised for their outstanding achievements in 2022.

"Real estate plays a vital role in Malaysia’s economy, and we must adapt to the changing times, while ensuring the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and service towards society. I am eager to collaborate with our members and all stakeholders to elevate the professionalism and betterment of the practice,” he said in the statement.

Outgoing president Chan, who has seen the growth, recognition and the strengthening and elevation of practice standards among MIEA members during her tenure, was proud of the members who stepped up to take the changes in their stride.

She said, “It is important for real estate agents and negotiators to consider the fast-paced changes that are taking place globally, especially in the areas of ESG (environmental, social and governance) and technology. I am happy to say that in 2022, our real estate professionals rose to the occasion, demonstrating extraordinary dedication and tenacity. Their achievements, in many cases surpassing those of previous years, illustrated the vibrant dynamism of the Malaysian real estate sector."

Highlights of the NREA this year is the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual who has shown a high degree of passion for the profession and industry, as well as the introduction of four new award categories, including residential, commercial and industrial rental deals of the year. Twelve achievers will also win the MIEA Million Dollar Achievers award.

According to the statement, the introduction of the rental deals categories underscores MIEA’s recognition of the rental market’s expanding importance and growing significance in the industry. “The NREA also stands as a testament to the real estate industry’s resilience and sustainability, and that real estate agents and negotiators remain crucial facilitators in empowering consumers to buy, sell and rent properties with confidence,” it added.
