KUALA LUMPUR (June 19): National carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd’s sales this year (2023) look set to surpass last year’s total sales of 141,432 units, fuelled by continuous Proton car sales and its all-new X90 model.

“The target this year is higher than last year, and so far compared to our 2022 performance, we already indicate [a] certain percentage of increment compared to 2022,” Proton deputy chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah told reporters after the launch of the Proton Digital Experience (Proton DX) centre on Monday (June 19).

Last year, Proton sales stood at 141,432 units (domestic and export), the highest since 2013.

As of May this year, Proton’s sales stood at 62,970 units — a year-on-year increase of 38.9% — driven by the festive period and the end of tax-exempted car deliveries.

Meanwhile, Roslan said the newly launched Proton X90 model is expected to boost Proton’s total industry volume this year.

“We also look into expanding our export market, despite all the challenges facing certain countries,” he said.

The Proton X90 has clocked bookings for 5,000 units since it was launched in May this year, while about 250 units have been delivered to customers.

At noon break, Proton’s majority owner DRB-Hicom Bhd closed one sen or 0.72% higher at RM1.40, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM2.71 billion.
