PUTRAJAYA (May 25): Appeals by former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his son Datuk Mohamad Nizar Najib, who is also Pekan Umno Youth chief, at the Court of Appeal over their unpaid income taxes of RM1.69 billion and RM13.16 million respectively sought by the Inland Revenue Board are scheduled to be heard on June 16.
The dates were finalised today following case management before the scheduled hearing next month.
The case management was before the appellate court's deputy registrar Mariam Hasanah Othman, who fixed another case management session on May 31.
The hearing date was confirmed by Najib and Nizar's lawyer Wee Yeong Kang from Shafee & Co.
The former premier, who is Pekan member of Parliament, is appealing the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision last July 22 that allowed the Inland Revenue Board's application to enter a summary judgement against him and ordered him to pay RM1.69 billion in additional taxes.
Similarly, Nizar is appealing a Shah Alam High Court's summary judgement that was entered against him last Sept 25.
A summary judgment is where a court decides a case through arguments without hearing the testimony of witnesses in a trial.
Since then, a bankruptcy notice had been issued to the 67-year-old former Umno president in February. Najib has applied for a stay of the notice and is trying to set it aside. Case management for Najib's bankruptcy notice was scheduled yesterday but now has been shelved to June 2.
Besides Najib and Nizar, the High Court also obtained a summary judgement against another of the former premier's son Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin Najib last July 6, where he has been ordered to pay RM37.6 million, for which a bankruptcy notice has also been entered against him.
