KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 24): Ten former MARA Corp staff are suing their former employer for unlawful termination. MARA Corp is the investment and commercial arm of Majlis Amanah Rakyat.

The 10 who were issued their termination letters on Jan 28, 2021 included senior directors and executives hired by former chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Badlisyah Abdul Ghani.

Badlisyah, who is also former CEO of Lembaga Tabung Haji, was appointed in September 2020 but put on garden leave two months later. He was later dismissed in January 2021.

These 10 former employees are claiming that their termination was "unjust and unlawful" and are seeking to be compensated for the remainder of their fixed-term contracts.

The case was filed at the Industrial Court under Section 20 of the Industrial Relations Act, according to the group's counsel Bhavanash Sharma from Messrs Bhavanash Sharma.

Bhavanash said the 10 were dismissed due to "redundancy" and that their appointments were not "budgeted for and/or approved" in accordance with the company's Limits of Authority.

The matter has been set for case management on March 21, 2022.
