KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 13): Global mobile gaming market revenue jumped 19.5% year-on-year (y-o-y) to US$75.4 billion (RM304.62 billion) in 2020 on the back of shelter-in-place orders.
Research data analysed and published by Safe Betting Sites (SBS) recently showed that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile was the top grossing title in 2020.
In total, it generated US$2.6 billion, an increase of 64.3% y-o-y.
Honor of Kings was the second, raising US$2.5 billion, or up by 42.8% y-o-y.
SBS said their total of US$5.1 billion was higher than the US$4.4 billion which the next four titles raised.
Meanwhile, Pokemon GO was the third highest grossing title for the period, accumulating US$1.2 billion.
Coin Master was fourth and Roblox took the fifth spot, each raising US$1.1 billion.
Monster Strike missed the billion-dollar mark as it raised US$958 million.
Last year was the first time five games reached the billion-dollar threshold.
Meanwhile, California-headquartered app market data and insight company App Annie predicted that the mobile gaming industry will raise US$120 billion in 2021, citing sophisticated mobile gaming capabilities.
For the gaming industry as a whole, International Data Corporation expects a double-digit growth in 2021.
To some extent, the introduction of next-generation consoles will contribute to the growth.
Following their launches in November 2020, the US gaming market saw a 58% y-o-y uptick in hardware sales and a 32% rise in software sales.
