MELAKA (Nov 8): State governments must work in tandem with the federal government to ensure that development plans and policies are implemented effectively, thereby bringing greater benefits to the people, said PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
He said alignment in terms of direction and stance between the two levels of government was important to ensure the country's development agenda could be implemented comprehensively.
"There must be leaders (at the state level) who share the federal government's stance so that all plans involving the people's development in the state can move in tandem with the objectives and aspirations of the federal government.
"This state election is important for the people of Melaka to assess how the state can also play a significant role in contributing to the country’s economic growth, trade performance and overall standing," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after a group ceramah in support of Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Kelebang (N.14) constituency, Farzana Hayani Mohd Nasir, in the 16th Melaka State Election, here on Saturday (Nov 7) night.
Citing the Melaka Gateway project, Muhammad Kamil, who is also the finance minister’s political secretary, said the project had the potential to add value to the state's development and trade if managed well, but had stalled for a long time despite several promises to revive it.
"However, to date, the state government has yet to take any action. This is apart from several other important projects in Melaka," he said.
Earlier, in his speech, he said coordination between the state and federal governments was crucial to ensure that issues affecting the people which required federal government intervention could be addressed more effectively.
He said this could be realised if PH succeeded in forming a new government in Melaka after the state election.
On Farzana Hayani, he said that if the young candidate received the mandate of voters in the Kelebang constituency, she would help resolve pressing issues in the area, including recurring floods in Bukit Rambai and Seberang Gajah, which had persisted for the past 20 years.
"I will personally speak to the prime minister and submit an appeal to him on this issue, just as I did for this area a month ago, as there is an urgent need to address it," he said.
The Election Commission has set Nov 14 as polling day for the Melaka state election, with early voting scheduled for Nov 10.
