(Nov 6): The Trump family crypto venture World Liberty Financial has announced a new buyback plan for its WLFI token after the price fell following this week’s US midterm elections.
Cryptocurrencies whipsawed following initial results from Tuesday’s election, showing Democrats would retake control of both chambers of Congress next year. Tokens linked to Republican President Donald Trump were hit by a particularly acute selloff.
WLFI tokens have fallen about 8% since election night and are down more than 70% from their high this year, according to CoinGecko data. The selloff has put fresh focus on how the Trump family’s crypto ventures have become intertwined with the president’s political fortunes. The buyback plan could provide support for the token’s price as it grapples with this week’s election fallout.
“The goal is to encourage active participation in WLFI governance and consolidate voting power among our most committed long-term holders,” World Liberty Financial said in a post on X Thursday. WLFI allows holders to vote on proposals governing the protocol, with more tokens conferring greater voting power, subject to applicable limits.
About 32% of WLFI’s 100 billion maximum token supply is currently in circulation, according to CoinGecko.
The buyback will initially be funded through an allocation that may include fees earned from reserves backing the project’s USD1 stablecoin and other sources, World Liberty said in its post. The company did not disclose the size of the initial allocation or a timeline for purchases, but said buybacks would become “an ongoing part of our long-term strategy with the pace and scale” determined by ecosystem growth and participation.
World Liberty didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside US working hours.
The company has previously bought back WLFI, including through a buyback-and-burn program after the token began trading publicly in September 2025.
World Liberty was co-founded by Donald Trump and his sons, among other business partners, in the weeks before the 2024 election. DT Marks DEFI LLC, an entity affiliated with the president and members of his family, owns about 38% of World Liberty’s holding company, according to a disclosure on the website. The family also holds WLFI tokens, with economic interests tied to sales of the token and reserves backing the USD1 stablecoin, according to company disclosures.
The latest buyback plan comes at a sensitive time for the project as it faces a tougher political climate and a prolonged decline in its governance token.
Trump’s financial exposure to crypto has drawn scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers, raising questions about conflicts of interest as the administration has pushed an industry-friendly agenda. The president’s US$1.4 billion haul last year from crypto-related ventures, with about US$594 million of that coming from World Liberty sales, intensified concerns when it was disclosed in June.
