KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 6): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on boosting economic ties in a telephone call on Thursday.

Anwar and Rubio discussed ways to expand economic cooperation under the US-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership upgraded in October 2025, including through secure, cutting-edge American technology, the US Department of State said in a two-sentence readout.

However, no new agreements or investments were announced.

The US is among Malaysia’s largest trading partners and biggest investors.

A small group of US lawmakers have lobbied Rubio in July to review America’s military aid as well as access to technology and markets in response to Malaysia’s policy on Israel and Anwar’s pledge to deport any Israeli citizens found in the country.

The US-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, announced by Anwar and US President Donald Trump, expands bilateral cooperation covering trade and investment, advanced technology and critical minerals, defence and security, energy, regional peace, and people-to-people ties.
