GEORGE TOWN (Nov 4): The Penang government has no specific plans to develop state-owned land on Pulau Jerejak, although several private developers have submitted proposals for mixed development projects on the island, the state assembly was told.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the proposals included mixed developments, infrastructure and recreational facilities.

“A temporary occupation licence (TOL) for a 0.82-hectare site to build a bridge linking Persiaran Bayan Indah, near Queensbay, to Pulau Jerejak was approved in 2023 and renewed annually until 2026.

“The annual TOL fee is RM12,300,” he said in reply to Joshua Woo Sze Zeng (Pakatan Harapan-Pulau Tikus) during question time on Wednesday.

Chow said any development proposals would depend on planning approval, land matters and compliance with technical and legal requirements set by the relevant authorities.

A report earlier said a 1km bridge linking Pulau Jerejak to mainland Penang, costing RM500 million, was expected to begin construction this year.

About 85% of Pulau Jerejak is gazetted as a forest reserve and cannot be developed.
