(Nov 4): Australian graphic design platform Canva Group said on Wednesday it will slash 1,271 jobs, or around 22% of its workforce, as part of a restructuring after its growth slowed for the first time in a decade.
Canva co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins said the changes would reshape how the company is organised, where some teams are based and what roles it needs.
Canva said it is merging its Product, Growth and Platform teams into a single Product Org to cut handovers and give teams clearer ownership and more autonomy.
The firm added it is consolidating roles and simplifying layers to give teams end-to-end responsibility as splitting work across many subspecialties had fragmented ownership.
Canva said it will make Sydney the main base for more of its product teams and ask some staff to relocate, and from January it expects most hybrid employees to be in the office two to three days a week.
The graphic design firm will also provide $10,000 grants to departing employees for future endeavours.
"To set ourselves up for the next decade, we need to refound Canva, getting back to our roots of small, empowered teams with the freedom to make decisions, take ownership and focus on what matters most for our community," Perkins added.
