KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 2): Northern Solar Holdings Bhd (KL:NORTHERN) has secured two letters of award to supply renewable energy from solar projects with a combined capacity of 189 megawatts (MW), coupled with battery storage systems, to two data centre projects.
The awards, received through wholly owned subsidiary Northern Solar Assets Sdn Bhd, fall under the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), according to the group's filings with Bursa Malaysia on Monday.
The first project involves a 100MW solar facility with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to serve a data centre requiring 262.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually.
The second involves an 89MW solar facility, also equipped with BESS, for another data centre with an annual electricity requirement of 233.89 million kWh.
Together, the two data centres have a combined annual electricity requirement of approximately 496.69 million kWh.
Northern Solar did not disclose the value of either project or the identities of the awarding parties, citing confidentiality provisions.
It only said that the first award was issued by a Malaysian company involved in property investment and data centre infrastructure, while the second came from a Malaysian subsidiary of a Singapore-based data centre services operator.
The commencement dates for both projects have yet to be finalised, with further announcements expected upon the signing of definitive agreements.
Northern Solar expects the projects to contribute positively to its earnings and net assets per share during their execution.
The latest awards come as Northern Solar seeks to expand beyond its traditional solar engineering and construction business into owning renewable energy assets.
In September, Apex Securities said the group was finalising details of a potential 170MW solar-plus-storage project under CRESS, which could accelerate its transition towards generating recurring income from long-term electricity supply agreements.
However, it remains unclear whether the two latest awards are related to the project previously highlighted by the research house.
Northern Solar had also secured a RM34 million contract in October to develop a 9.5MW large-scale solar photovoltaic plant, bringing its total contract wins for the year at that point to RM153.4 million.
Its unbilled order book stood at RM189.3 million as at end-June 2026.
Northern Star transferred its listing from Bursa Malaysia's ACE Market to the Main Market on Oct 6.
Its shares closed down four sen or 3.54% at RM1.09 on Monday, valuing the group at RM431.2 million.
