JASIN (Nov 2): Barisan Nasional (BN) has pledged to provide improved toilet facilities for 24 homes across four Orang Asli villages in Asahan if it retains the state seat in the upcoming Melaka election.

BN candidate for the Asahan (N.10) state seat Datuk Dr Fairul Nizam Roslan said the initiative would benefit households in Kampung Orang Asli Sialang in Batang Melaka, Kampung Orang Asli Gapam Batu and Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Seraya in Bukit Senggeh, as well as Kampung Orang Asli Solok Terentang in Jus.

The incumbent Asahan assemblyman said upgrading the facilities would be a priority as the septic tanks serving the existing toilets had reached full capacity.

“We have recently been made aware of toilet problems affecting 24 Orang Asli homes here. The toilets were built many years ago, and their septic tanks are now full.

“This is an important issue as it concerns the health and well-being of the residents. If given another mandate, I hope to resolve the toilet problems affecting the 24 homes within a year, Insya-Allah,” he said when met while campaigning in Taman Batang Melaka here on Monday.

Meanwhile, Fairul Nizam, who is also the state Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Committee chairman, said 18 Orang Asli homes in Melaka had been repaired and refurbished during his tenure.

Popularly known as YB Along, he said the housing improvement initiative reflected the state government’s continued commitment to the welfare of the Orang Asli community and ensuring that they were not left behind in development.

He also said the provision of free WiFi services to 14 Orang Asli villages across Melaka under the Melaka Digital programme further demonstrated the state government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide between the Orang Asli community and other communities.

The Asahan constituency has four Orang Asli villages, with a total of 174 heads of households.

Polling day is set for Nov 14, while early voting will take place on Nov 10.
