ALOR GAJAH (Nov 2): The launch of two new hybrid vehicle models by EP Manufacturing Bhd (KL:EPMB) is expected to strengthen Melaka’s position as an automotive manufacturing hub, while also increasing production capacity and creating more high-skilled job opportunities in the state.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ab Rauf Yusoh said the introduction of the GWM Wey G9 MPV (HEV) and the GWM EC15S hybrid SUV marks another significant milestone in the development of the state’s automotive industry specifically in the transition from component manufacturing to the assembly of complete vehicles for both local and international markets.
"EPMB is now entering a phase of greater expansion, beyond assembling four Great Wall Motor (GWM) vehicle models, the company is also assembling vehicles from SAIC-MG and XPeng brands at its plant in Pegoh.
“This is the kind of progress we wish to see in Melaka with more investment, increased production capacity, and, most importantly, more high-skilled job opportunities for the people of Melaka,” he told reporters here on Monday.
He made these remarks following the launch of the production of the GWM Wey G9 and EC15S models, an event also attended by EPMB executive chairman Hamidon Abdullah.
Ab Rauf said Melaka possesses a solid industrial foundation, supported by existing industrial zones, modern infrastructure, a strong connectivity network, a skilled workforce, and an expanding network of local suppliers.
In this regard, he noted that the state government is prepared to upgrade facilities including the addition of assembly stations and the enhancement of vehicle inspection and delivery capabilities to support the company’s future operational expansion.
“Last year, the manufacturing sector remained a key driver of Melaka’s economy, contributing 35.4% to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP), which reached RM50.3 billion.
“Consequently, the state government will continue to facilitate all aspects related to investment, strengthen coordination among government agencies, and provide the necessary infrastructure to support the growth of this sector,' he said.
Meanwhile, he said Melaka currently has 195 electric vehicle (EV) charging units across 95 locations, with plans to add another 10 units by the end of 2026, aiming for a total of 300 charging units by next year.
"This is what I mean when I say that Melaka is always prepared. We are not only ready to welcome investments, but we also provide the necessary infrastructure, workforce, and ecosystem for the industry to grow, innovate, and achieve success.
"I believe that when the government and the industry move forward with a shared vision, investments will create opportunities, innovation will drive progress, and industrial growth will bring prosperity to the people," he said.
