(Nov 2): China’s central bank launched daily overnight reverse repurchase operations on Monday, kicking off a revamped liquidity framework that establishes the short-term tool as its primary policy anchor.

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) conducted 541 billion yuan (US$81.3 billion) overnight reverse repurchases on Monday at 1.25%. After accounting for maturing reverse repos, it resulted in a net withdrawal of 515 billion yuan from the banking system, according to Bloomberg calculations.

This marks the first regular session since the PBOC unveiled the overhaul on Friday, formalising a shift away from the seven-day reverse repo rate as its primary policy anchor. Other tools that used to be based on the seven-day benchmark will be linked to the overnight rate going forward, the PBOC had said.
