KUALA KANGSAR (Oct 29): The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has warned members of the Dewan Negara Perak and dignitaries of the Royal Court against misusing the Ruler’s name, royal influence and their titles for personal gain, financial profit or business opportunities.
The Sultan also urged them not to allow themselves to be used to assist parties in an improper or questionable manner, or to exert undue pressure on anyone.
“Shun corruption, the abuse of power and any conduct that might give rise to suspicion or tarnish the reputation of the throne and the Royal Court.
“Never allow your position to become a means of seeking special privileges, accumulating personal wealth or interfering in matters beyond the scope of your responsibilities,” he decreed at the 175th Meeting of Dewan Negara Perak at Istana Iskandariah here on Thursday.
Sultan Nazrin also urged members of the Dewan Negara Perak and dignitaries of the Royal Court to remain vigilant and exercise sound judgement in communications, particularly when using social media channels and platforms.
“... exercise care and discretion in both word and deed. Matters entrusted to you in confidence must be safeguarded. Information whose accuracy has yet to be established must not be circulated.
“Opinions should be expressed with due propriety, without giving rise to slander or discord. In today's world, a single remark or recording shared on social media can give rise to many different interpretations,” he said.
Sultan Nazrin also called on them to avoid disputes, power struggles and factionalism while maintaining close ties with the people.
He said public grievances must be heard and addressed, particularly those involving vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, orphans, low-income families and marginalised communities.
“Maintain good relations with people from every walk of life. Our state is home to people of diverse ethnicities, religions and backgrounds. Respect this diversity and work towards strengthening unity, in accordance with the Constitution and the law,” he said.
Sultan Nazrin said members of Dewan Negara Perak and royal dignitaries must understand the role of the monarchy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy.
“Respect the prescribed limits of authority and responsibility. Work professionally with the government and state institutions, without interfering in administrative affairs or using your position to advance partisan political interests,” he said.
The Sultan also encouraged them to continuously broaden their knowledge and improve their ways of working, understand societal changes, and make prudent use of technology.
The Sultan further stressed that every palace dignitary must set an example for their families, officers, staff and the wider community.
“Show that those who are close to the Ruler are equally committed to their responsibilities, and that those who are accorded honour also know how to honour others,” he added.
