KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 28): Malaysia’s producer price index (PPI) increased by 12.0% in September 2026, from 10.7% in August 2026, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

On an annual basis, the DOSM said among the main sectors of the PPI, mining recorded a substantial increase of 54.1% in September, compared with 41.2% in the previous month.

“This was primarily driven by the extraction of crude petroleum, which increased by 74.2%,” it said in its PPI local production report for September.

The PPI measures changes in the prices domestic producers receive for their goods and services, before they reach consumers.

The DOSM said the manufacturing sector increased by 9.4%, from 8.8% in August, mainly contributed by the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (35.0%) and the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (12.9%).

The agriculture, forestry and fishing sector rose moderately by 2.9%, from 4.6% in the preceding month, with animal production up 11.9%.

“The utility sectors also recorded increases, with electricity and gas supply and water supply rising by 5.5% and 3.2% respectively,” it said.

On a month-on-month basis, PPI local production rose 1.6% in September, up from 1.0% in August.

The mining sector recorded a 10.3% increase (August: 6.7%), driven by the extraction of crude petroleum index (13.6%).

PPI local production increased by 10.8% in the third quarter, from a 7.4% increase in the previous quarter. The increase was contributed by all sectors, particularly mining (41.9%) and manufacturing (8.8%).

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the PPI increased by 2.8%, slower than a 6.8% increase in the second quarter, mainly supported by the manufacturing sector (3.6%).
