KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 28): Berjaya Property Bhd's (KL:BPROP) unit Berjaya Construction Bhd said on Wednesday it will undertake design-and-build works for the Sanglang Port development project in Perlis.

The maritime infrastructure project is aimed at enhancing the state’s maritime connectivity and complementing recently completed logistics infrastructure, including the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Free Commercial Zone — Perlis Inland Port (PIP) and the Chuping Valley Industrial Area.

According to its bourse filing, the group will partner with owner-developer Sanglang Port Mutiara Perlis Sdn Bhd, leveraging its technical and project delivery expertise to build the port’s infrastructure.

The filing did not disclose the specific value of the job to be undertaken by Berjaya Construction, which covers procurement, design development, engineering and construction delivery for the project.

Commenting on the significance of the project in a statement on Wednesday, Berjaya Corporation Bhd (KL:BJCORP) founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun said the project underscores the importance of investing in strategic infrastructure to support Malaysia’s long-term economic growth and strengthen regional connectivity.

The project has an estimated total development cost of about RM1.2 billion, including initial estimated construction costs of RM675 million, and will be developed in stages subject to relevant approvals, implementation arrangements and construction milestones.

Phase 1, covering 2-4km of the trestle and the associated terminals, is estimated to take 30 months.

On the other hand, phase 2, covering the liquefied petroleum gas landing facilities, is estimated to take 12 months.

The development comprises two multi-user terminals, a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) terminal and a general cargo terminal along a 4km trestle with water depths of up to 11.9 metres.

The master plan provides for five key maritime activities which include RORO operations, fisheries facilities, general cargo handling, an energy hub and multi-user facilities.

“Improved cargo-handling capabilities and access to wider markets with PIP and Sanglang Port could strengthen the state’s attractiveness to investors in logistics, manufacturing, energy and related industries,” said Mutiara Perlis founder and group executive chairman Datuk Shabaruddin Ibrahim.

Berjaya Property shares were flat at 25 sen at the noon break on Wednesday, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM1.25 billion.
