KUCHING (Oct 26): The US$50 billion (RM204 billion) investment announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently includes strategic plans by a major international company to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in Tanjung Embang.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said further details, including the name of the company involved, could not be disclosed at this stage to preserve the confidentiality of the corporate transaction.
“What the prime minister said is true, but it is still at the planning stage. There is indeed a proposal to invest in an AI data centre.
“We cannot disclose the amount for now because it involves a top international company...we cannot reveal its name, but it is indeed there,” he told reporters after officiating at the Sarawak Urban Forum 2.0 here on Monday.
Earlier in his speech, Abang Johari revealed that the prime minister himself had contacted him to enquire about the entry of the world's leading technology investor into Sarawak.
The premier said the international technology giant had chosen Kuching as its investment destination because it views Sarawak as a forward-looking state that is aggressively transitioning towards a new economy.
“The topmost technology company in the world is coming to Kuching. Why? Because they see that we are forward-looking.
“Sarawak is transitioning to a new economy and we have prepared Sarawakians in terms of human capital. We provide free education, and that is why they like it because they know they will have good people to work with them,” he said.
On Saturday, the media reported that the prime minister revealed that a global technology company had chosen Malaysia, including Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, for a US$50 billion investment in the AI sector.
